Are you interested in becoming a volunteer lay chaplain for The Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Service in Sonoma County?

The Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Service in Sonoma County is an interfaith service to Law Enforcement and to the citizens of Sonoma County.

Once commissioned as a Law Enforcement Chaplain, you will be asked to do the following:
  • Be on call two days a month for a 24-hour period.
  • Serve for a minimum of one year.
  • Complete call-out reports in a timely manner.
  • Debrief with your mentor after a call-out.
  • Attend every other month in-service training.
  • Abide by the policies and procedures as described in the Policies and Procedures Manual.

What do I need to become a Law Enforcement Chaplain?

If you answer yes to the following questions, you have many of the skills neeeded to become a Law Enforcement Chaplain:

  • Do you have compassion for others?
  • Are you a compassionate listener?
  • Do you have respect for all law enforcement and first responder personnel?
  • Are you a calm presence in the midst of a crisis?
  • Do you have a desire to serve your community?
  • Do you have the physical stamina to stay on your feet for serveral hours if needed to do so?
To apply for the Academy, you need to meet the following requirements:
  • Be a high school graduate or have a GED.
  • Have a valid California Driver's license.
  • Be a permanent resident of Sonoma County.
  • Have no record of criminal offenses (misdemeanor or felony).
  • Have current liability and property damage insurance on any vehicles used while on Chaplaincy business.
  • Be a current and active member in a worshipping community. If you are not active in a worshipping community, a statement of your personal belief and spiritual practice may be considered.
  • Provide a reference letter fom a leader in your worshipping community outlining your qualifications to be trained as a lay chaplain.
To be considered as a Chaplain Candidate, you will be asked to provide and do the following:
  • Attend an interview with Chaplain leaders.
  • Take a psychological temperament analysis.
  • Be fingerprinted at the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office and pass a background check.
  • Provide a current driving record from the California DMV.
  • Attend the Academy one night a week for three hours, do all homework assignments and abide by the attendance requirements.
  • Be a current and active member in a worshipping community.
