The Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Service in Sonoma County is an interfaith service to Law Enforcement and to the citizens of Sonoma County.

What Skills do I need to become a Law Enforcement Chaplain?

If you answer yes to the following questions, you have many of the skills needed to become a Law Enforcement Chaplain:

  • Do you have compassion for others?
  • Are you a compassionate listener?
  • Do you have respect for all Law Enforcement and First Responder Personnel?
  • Are you a calm presence in the midst of a crisis?
  • Do you have a desire to serve your community?
  • Do you have the physical stamina to stay on your feet for several hours if needed?
What are the Requirements to be a Law Enforcement Chaplain?

To apply for the Academy, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be a high school graduate or have a GED.
  • Have a valid California Driver's license.
  • Be a permanent resident of Sonoma County.
  • Have no felony convictions.
  • Have current liability and property damage insurance on any vehicles used while on Chaplaincy business.
  • Provide a reference letter either fom a leader in your worshipping community or a person who knows you well (other than a family member) outlining your qualifications to be trained as a Law Enforcement Chaplain.
Once commissioned as a Law Enforcement Chaplain, you will be asked to:
  • Be on call two (2) days a month for a 24-hour period, 8am - 8am.
  • Serve for a minimum of one (1) year.
  • Complete call-out reports in a timely manner.
  • Attend five (5) Chaplain training/meetings during the year.
  • Abide by policies and procedures outline in our Policies and Procedures Manual.
To be considered as a Chaplain Candidate, you will be asked to provide and do the following:
  • Attend an interview with the Executive Director of the Chaplaincy and the Director of the Chaplain Academy.
  • Be fingerprinted at the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department and pass a background check.
  • Provide a copy of your current CA driver's license and proof of insurance.
  • Attend the Chaplain Academy one (1) night a week for three hours, complete all homework assignments, and abide by the attendance requirements.
